1. A clay model of Sitting Sakyamuni Buddha statue

We have sculpted a clay model of a sitting Buddha statue with 1.5meters high in our Beijing workshop in 2019. The Buddha statue has been sculpted with clay within 2 months. In the effort of the skilled clay sculptor, the appearance of the Buddha is sacred and graceful. It is a south-Asian style Buddha statue. The posture of the clay Buddha statue is in meditating, right arm being up and hand facing front, the left hand putting on crossed legs and hand facing sky. This is a special hand gesture called Mudra in Buddhism.

After the clay model completed, to acquire the Buddha statue’s shape date and further optimization, 3D scanning has been applied. Then we can get a digital 3D file and can make the renderings by 3D software on the computer.

Ancient China has a long history of making statues in bronze. Thousands of bronze wares, kitchenware, sacrificial vessel, and other bronze items have been discovered by archaeologists from different dynasties over the land of China. During the two thousand years, Chinese ancestors including craft men, artists, created hundreds of bronze statue types that influence large-scale statuary.

Casting workers recognized through trial and error that bronze had distinct advantages over pure copper for making statuary. Tin Bronze is an alloy typically composed of 90 percent copper and 10 percent tin, and, because it has a lower melting point than pure copper, it will stay liquid longer when filling a mold. It also produces a better casting than pure copper and has superior tensile strength.

Lost-wax casting became a major technique for producing bronze statuary. The lost-wax casting of bronze is that the wax model is surrounded with sands with adhesive and then heated to remove the wax and harden sands shell. Next, the mold is inverted and molten bronze poured into it from an opening. When the bronze cools, the workers break the sand shell model to reveal a bronze reproduction. For small bronze Buddha statuary, it can be cast in one piece. After sandblasting and grinding, the original bronze Buddha statuary can be achieved. Then next is finishing. Some clients need patina, some need gold leaf, etc. The final finish will be done according to the client's requirements.
